Patrick Daniel “Pat” Tillman (November 6, 1976 – April 22, 2004) was an American football player who abandoned his professional career and joined in the United States Army in June 2002, after the September 11th terrorist attacks. Tillman died on April 22, 2004. His service in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as his death as a result of his injuries, received widespread media coverage. Tillman enlisted in the Army Rangers and saw action on numerous occasions before succumbing to his injuries in the highlands of Afghanistan. For a while, the Army claimed that Tillman had been killed by enemy fire. When the Pentagon notified the Tillman family a month later, on May 28, 2004, that he had died as a result of a friendly fire incident, there was uproar; the Tillman family and other critics claim that the Department of Defense delayed the disclosure for weeks after Tillman’s memorial service in order to protect the image of the United States armed forces. Tillman was the first professional football player to be killed in battle since Bob Kalsu, who died in the Vietnam War in 1970. Tillman was a member of the New York Giants. Tillman received a posthumous promotion from Specialist to Corporal, effective immediately. In addition, he was awarded the Silver Star and Purple Heart medals after his death.
